And Now... by Oregonian
I have no other purpose anymore.
The evil one lies dead upon the floor
amid the rubble, dust, and broken stone
where chaos, mayhem, horror reigned before.

My life was purposed to this single end,
each day, each thought, each action turned to mend
the broken social fabric of our world,
an evil web too vast to comprehend.

–Of course the boy must die.” That callous voice
declared my destiny. I had no choice —
a human sacrifice. The greater good
demanded it, amidst the strife and noise.

The wands fall silent. See the rising sun.
It gleams upon the vanquished evil one.
His wretched henchmen, malefactors all,
are leaderless or dead. Their day is done.

The bodies sprawl like puppets on the floor,
concealed beyond the far side of the door
in pools of blood or littered on the lawn,
and this is what my life was purposed for.

It was not requisite that I survive.
Against all odds, I find myself alive.
To my surprise, there comes a Second Act.
The play goes on. Tomorrow will arrive.

I cannot let the universal roar
of approbation pierce me to the core.
My task is finished. Blankness lies ahead.
I have no other purpose anymore.
