Phoenix Est Lamentationes

A lone cry sears the setting sky.

The sky is jagged, torn along
the clouded seams, frayed
and burned by battle fright,
charred from the flames
of the dying bird whose
lamentations set ablaze
an otherwise perfect sky.

The melody, though rich and full,
strikes fast the war-strewn ground,
lightning from a broken storm
(a mourning storm),
swift to pierce the soul
where the damage will do its worst.

And in its red and golden flames,
the grieving bird lets
slip a tear and crashes to
its funeral pyre.
The tear cascades to the
open fields, reflections
melding together as blood-red
and envy-green light are cast
for the very last time.

Silence would reign upon
these defeated hills,
stark and deafening,
if not for the lone cry
searing the shredded heavens,
the burning echo stretching
over the fallen earth
as the faithful bird dies.
Chapter Endnotes: It shouldn't surprise anyone that I wrote something dark and that I love any and all comments. :)
