2016 Quicksilver Quill Awards Results!

by the opaleye @ 10/15/16 7:09
It’s my great pleasure to bring you the results of the 2016 Quicksilver Quill Awards!

As you know, the Quicksilver Quill Awards are about awarding the best writing MuggleNet Fan Fiction authors have had to offer for the year. This year, nominations were received across six categories and we have thirteen winners in total.

Before we get to the results, I would like to profusely thank the judges and category leaders, who made this all possible. This could not have been done without them, and having winners chosen by our members and for our members really reflects how our community works and what sets it apart from other sites out there.

Despite our smaller number of judges and categories than previous years, we had a large number of nominations and many of the decisions were fiercely contested. To preserve the integrity of the QSQs, we still judged to the standards we have held for nearly a decade, and the results are truly reflective of how our fandom has carried on for so many years and still produces fine, well-honed literature after all this time. Always.

QSQ Winners 2016

Best General Fic

One-Shot - Aunt Marge’s Even Bigger Mistake by FloreatCastellum

We loved this fic for bringing us pure enjoyment. With laugh-out-loud moments and excellent characterisation, this is more than just your average humour fic. The characters are just right, not so over the top as to make them caricatures, but still undeniably unpleasant. Ginny is an absolute gem, and Harry's anxiety about seeing his family again is captured perfectly. The laughs are in the rhythm of the writing, and in the words that paint a picture ripe with comedy. Delightful.

Chaptered - Makers of Fine Wands by CanisMajor

The research and detail that has gone into this fic is phenomenal, and the execution of the premise is rich and flawless. Everything works together to build up a very vivid picture of an era and place we very rarely see in fanfiction – Athens, 382 BC. We love the mixture of canon and mythology, and the different portrayal of the Muggle/Wizarding divide that could have existed in Classical times. This is an exciting and original backstory for the Ollivander family.

AND

Not From Others by FloreatCastellum

With great writing and fresh characterisation, we loved the way this fic filled in those Seventh-year gaps. This fic gave us chills, excited and intrigued us. Ginny can be a difficult character to write, and we appreciated the way she was captured in this fic, giving us a window into her inner self and her experiences during that year at Hogwarts. The scope of this fic is astounding, and those of us who didn’t finish it during the judging process can’t wait to go back and read more!

Best Dark/Angsty Fic

One-Shot - Fortress: An Anatomy by teh tarik

This story is brilliantly written, and the metaphor of the building as a living thing survives the entire story without becoming repetitive or forced. Telling the story from the perspective of a personified building is a bold choice, but it works oh so well. The characters of Gellert and Albus are done just as well as their surroundings. In the young Albus we glimpse the older Albus we know, and Gellert feels both human and inhuman, the man he was and the monster he has become. This story takes the time to dig into the dark elements and find something new. It is both creepy and beautiful, stepping over the line and pushing the imagination.

Chaptered - A Slant-Told Tale by Squibstress

Many unique elements of dark desperation appear in this author's vision of the earlier part of Minerva McGonagall's life. We described the story as "extremely dark and gritty", "edgy, original", "well-written", "powerful". It dives into the taboo depths of the Wizarding World that were not explored in the original, children's series, and delves into the pureblood society, bringing to light the nastiness that was only hinted at in the books. It is a disturbing story at many points involving choices that Minerva makes and their inevitable fallout. The author adds a new dimension to Minerva: she is seen not only as a strong, powerful witch, but as a faulty human being who is sitting on some pretty big secrets. We look forward to reading the conclusion of this imaginative, original story.

Best Post-Hogwarts/Next Generation Fic

The Aurors by FloreatCastellum

We found this story original and new, gripping and exciting, and we couldn’t wait to read more of it! The action is great, the mystery tense and intriguing. We liked how it portrays Harry's transition from always having Ron (and Hermione) by his side to making it on his own and having to put his trust and faith in someone else. Theia is also a richly drawn character with her own past, quirks and flaws.

AND

On The Verge of Happy Endings by WrenWinterSong

We loved the hopefulness of this story, and the way the separate chapters can be read as one-shots yet flow together nicely to give it a sense of completeness too. The story does a great job of filling in some of the gap between the end and the epilogue.

Best Poetry

The Lethifold by Oregonian

The Lethifold didn't grab us as much as slithered its way into our imaginations, wrapping us in its atmosphere. It is an impressive feat of Gothic storytelling, rhythm, structure, and pacing. This is a visceral poem which is perfectly matched to the subject matter. The writing itself is fleshy and full, like the lethifold as it devours its victim.

Best Canon Romance Fic

One-Shot - The Moon and the Sea by FloreatCastellum

Stories about the last days of James and Lily are not uncommon, but this one stands out for its originality, simplicity, and poignancy. It gave us chills when we read it, whimsical and bittersweet, the relationship of parents with an infant who they are in love with as much as they are with each other, ending with the heart-dropping revelation of the date, the unexpected flash of tragedy in the midst of this peaceful, happy interlude. The romance shines through in the small moments, the easy back-and-forth dialogue, the little details and simple acts, and the way in which baby Harry is part of their love.

Chaptered - Firewhiskey (A Love Story) by Wonk

We were impressed by the originality of this story and the remarkable detail about Neville's efforts to restore his parents' minds, really showing his love for them and his determination to heal them. At a deeper level it shows the great love between Hannah and Neville in their efforts to protect each other and then in the sacrifices they are willing to make for each other. The dramatic tension is well-developed and believable, the characterizations are true, and the complex and richly detailed plot makes sense in terms of Neville's determination, bravery, and loyalty, which we all know makes Neville Neville.

Best Non-Canon Romance Fic

One-Shot - love and lycanthropy and other institutions by teh tarik

The writing of this story blew us away: the prose hooked us from the very first sentence. The words seem nearly acrobatic, bending and contorting themselves in new and unusual ways to accommodate the author’s wishes. The characterisation of the Marauders is beautifully drawn; Sirius and James are as we expect them to be from canon, and Remus is poignantly written: his anguish, his surprise at finding friends. We were particularly impressed by the way the author has written Peter in a way that predicted his eventual betrayal while also making it understandable that the other three didn’t suspect a thing. The romance is intense yet believable. A well-crafted, gorgeous piece of writing.

Chaptered - The Green Knight Rises by Kerichi

The main characters in this story, Scorpius and Rose, are appealing and sympathetically portrayed. They are a contemporary couple, both pursuing careers post-Hogwarts and they are adorable together – they almost feel like a canon couple. Kreacher in his new role as Harry’s house elf was a source of amusement, and we also particularly felt that the characterisation of Lucius Malfoy and his relationship with Scorpius stood out. It’s clear that a lot of work went into this story, and the result has action and romance in spades.

AND

A Slant-Told Tale by Squibstress

The premise of this story is great: a young Minerva McGonagall enters a loveless marriage to secure her family’s financial security and a chance to continue her Transfiguration studies, and her life thereafter is haunted by some of her early choices. Much of the story is non-romance, to the point that one might wonder if romantic love was something Minerva did not count on including in her life, but the story also shows us that she is capable of and receptive to love, even though it is difficult to fit into her complicated life. The writing is top-notch and the background setting wonderful. Although the story is long, there is a consistent premise that keeps it exactly on track. An excellent example of how all the dialogue and detail serve to propel the plot forward, and nothing is extraneous.

Quicksilver Quill Awards 2016

by the opaleye @ 06/17/16 3:54

Hello, and welcome to the eleventh annual Quicksilver Quill awards!

Everyone’s favourite MNFF awards ceremony has rolled around once again. Since 2006, the Quicksilver Quills have celebrated the best writing MNFF has to offer. Each year, stories are nominated and judged by our members. Some of MNFF’s finest readers and writers assess each nomination and decide upon the winners.

Like last year, there will be a few changes. Rather than having the traditional twelve categories, we have condensed the categories to six. In each category there may be one or two winners, and winners may be separated into one-shots and chaptered.

Categories

  • Best General Story (contains best General, Mystery, History, Marauder Era, Humor, and Alternate Universe fics)

  • Best Dark/Angsty Story

  • Best Canon Romance Story (contains the SSP of Dumbledore/Grindelwald)

  • Best Non-Canon Romance Story (contains all other SSPs)

  • Best Poetry

  • Best Post-Hogwarts/Next Generation Story

Nomination threads are currently open and will close June 30th. Judging will begin soon after. Anyone is welcome to submit a nomination either via the forums or as a comment on the archives. We are looking to find the absolute best stories from the last twelve months. They should be well-written, have engaging plots and characters, and be a good representation of the category for which they are nominated (though they don’t necessarily have to have been submitted to the corresponding archive category). In short, they should be the stories that make you go WOW.

The rules are similar to previous years but please refresh yourself with them anyway to make sure you nominate the right stories in the right categories.

Rules

+ Only stories written (or, in the case of chaptered fics, updated) since the 1st June 2015 are eligible to be nominated.
+ Stories do not have to be in the corresponding archive category to be nominated. For example, a story may be in a romance category but if you think it is particularly dark, it can be nominated in Dark/Angst.
+ An author or story can win more than one award in the same year. We reserve the right to place a cap on the number of awards given to any one author/story at a later date.
+ An author is eligible to win in a category they have been either winner or runner up in before.
+ Winning stories from previous years may not be nominated again in any category, though with the twelve month rule, we do not expect this to be an issue.
+ Please use the form provided in the first post of each nomination thread and ensure you provide a working link. Nominations that do not follow the correct format will be removed.
+ Do not second nominations - seconding clutters up threads and gives an unrealistic indication of how many stories have been nominated. Having more than one nomination does not increase a story’s chances of winning.
+ Any author can be nominated, including moderators.
+ Each person may only nominate a maximum of FIVE stories across the six categories. Please try and keep all your nominations for a category in one post to make it easier to keep track of how many stories you have nominated.
+ There is a cap on the maximum number of stories able to be nominated this year at thirty-five. Again, due to the low estimated participation of judges it is simply not realistic to judge more stories than this. This means that nominations
will be done on a first come, first serve sort of basis.

These are changes from 2014's rule of twenty-five per member and no limit on total stories.
+ The judging committees reserve the right not to present an award in any categories where they do not feel the standard of nominations is high enough. However this will only be done as a last resort.

Judging

There is a thread open on the forums for members to volunteer to be judges. This can be found in Fiction Junction. Judging can be demanding but also fun, and we really value the input of as many members as possible in the judging process. You can find more information on judging in the sign-up thread. We do require that one be a member of the forums in order to judge, as judging does take place within the forums.

The Fantastic Beasts Challenge

by the opaleye @ 04/28/16 4:58

The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer has sent the fandom abuzz, so let's write some fic! Take any of the trailers, teasers, posters or clips that have been released so far and use them to inspire a fic or poem. It's that simple. I've provided some prompts below but you don't need to use them if you think of something else which tickles your fancy.

It could be a specific scene, line or shot from the trailer, or it could just feature a fantastical beast even if it’s not shown in the trailer at all. You could write something about Newt himself, one of the new characters introduced, or Newt's son Rolf and daughter-in-law Luna! Really, the choice is yours.

Let’s just celebrate one of the many exciting things happening in our fandom right now.

The challenge will be open until May 31st, 11:59pm GMT. Please post a link to your submissions in the comments below, or post in the challenge thread on our beta boards.

Prompt 1: May 2nd, 1998

Many creatures fought and died in the Battle of Hogwarts, either for or against our heroes. Make one of them the focus of your fic.

Prompt 2: Riddle Me This

"Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand won’t tolerate this nonsense."

On October 6th 2014, JKR posted the above cryptic message on Twitter. Unscramble that and you get, "Newt Scamander only meant to stay in New York for a few hours." Use this as the first line of your fic and take it from there.

Prompt 3: Niffler
Personally, I think the trailer's stand-out star is that adorable Niffler. That's it. That's the prompt: a Niffler.

The Doomed Ship Valentine Ficathon

by @ 01/21/16 3:33

Fic Masterlist:
Communi Damnum by Nagini Riddle [Harry/Hermione]

The Marred Boy by Padfoot11333 [Remus/Sirius]

A Ship to Wreck by FloreatCastellum [Astoria/Padma]

The Crime is Never What You Steal by BrokenPromise [Albus/Gellert]

We Rise and We Fall by minnabird [Cedric/Oliver]

Carried In My Heart by Oregonian [Hannah/Ernie]

Not all ships were created equal. Some are just more doomed than others. We’re going to celebrate that.

In this activity you can give and fill prompts for various doomed ships. Rather than a challenge, it’s more of a celebration for those ships we have come to mourn.

First of all, what is a doomed ship?

Not all ships are doomed. A doomed ship can be one or more of the following:

1. One or both members of your ship died, disappeared, or left e.g. Remus/Tonks, James/Lily

2. One or both members of your ship were in another relationship at the end of the book or in post-book canon according to JKR e.g. Draco/Pansy, Dean/Luna, Katie/Angelina

3. The relationship is never resolved in canon e.g. Fred/Angelina, Albus/Gellert

4. Canon hates your ship (and wants it to die a death full of torture and/or emotional suffering) e.g. Harry/Hermione, Draco/Ginny, Tom/Minerva

There may be some crossover in the above categories e.g. Fred/Angelina is doomed because a) Fred dies, b) Angelina marries George according to post-book canon and c) their relationship was never resolved in canon. Basically, they’re really, really doomed.

So how is this going to work?

Go to this thread to read the prompts and post your own. If you claim a prompt and write a fic, you can post the link to your fic in the comments below or in the Great Hall here.

2015 Quicksilver Quill Awards - Results!

by the opaleye @ 09/16/15 1:01

As you know, the Quicksilver Quill Awards are about awarding the best writing MuggleNet Fan Fiction authors have had to offer for the year. Nominations are received across several categories. This year, we have eight winners in total.

We would like to thank the judges, who make this all possible. This could not have been done without them, and having winners chosen by our members and for our members really reflects how our community works and what sets it apart from other sites out there.

As the number of nominations was small this year, we do have fewer winning stories than in the past. However, to preserve the integrity of the QSQs, we still judged to the standards we have held for over a decade.

Like in previous years, winners of the awards will also receive a personalised banner, created by one of MNFF's finest bannermakers and chosen through a special competition. This year's winning banner was created by our very own showrunner, Lily/Padfoot11333, and you can view a sneak peak by clicking here. Now, on to the moment you’ve all been waiting for!

QSQ Winners 2015

Best General Story

Tiny Animals by Oregonian

This is a wonderful Missing Moment...absolutely beautifully written. It gave us chills and made us think hard about the British social services system. It is thought provoking, stays with us, and is so sad...totally different from the other winner. They are both stellar examples of what their categories should be. We can't even make a meaningful comparison because both stories are so good.

and

The Not-So-Fast and Furious by minnabird

We thought this story was hilarious. The two winners are so different it's like comparing apples and oranges. Neither is of higher quality than the other, and The Not-So-Fast and the Furious was excellent. Although we didn't need to read previous stories in this timeline, we definitely want to now. The characterization is great, it felt good to read, it was funny and it made us throw back our heads and howl...uh....we mean laugh.

Dark/Angsty

Astriferous by Padfoot11333

This story has everything dark/angst requires: romantic angst, parental angst, existential angst, overwhelming doubt, and rough struggles. At the same time, it radiates stardust and there is a strength in Merope that is not often mentioned: the hopes for her son. There is also very vivid language that captures the raw textures of Merope's world, leaving us as readers in no doubt of what is happening to her.

Post-Hogwarts/Next-Generation

One-shot - Now and Forever by Northumbrian

This unique story was full of creative ideas and contained some seriously cool magical elements. The thought of a statue deciding where it wants to be and then to travel to that place is very funny, although the main thread of the story is rather sad: how important is to those involved that only the fallen be memorialized at Hogwarts. We’ve never read another story like it, but it fits right into the Wizarding World; it feels like it could’ve sprung from Rowling’s own imagination.

Chaptered - Friends and Foes by Northumbrian

This story is great fun: the characterisation is golden, the writing is crisp, enjoyable and engaging. It has plot in spades, a good balance between plot and exploration of family as a theme, and OCs with drew us in. A major asset of the writing is how grounded it is in both Britain and Rowling's world. It's well-paced, well written and, most importantly, enjoyable to read.

and

Chaptered - Allegiance by ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor

This dark story moves seamlessly between past and present in a way that is not a device but a definite strength. The plot is promising, the writing is powerful, and no characterisation can compare to what has been done with Draco here: the story has delved into aspects of his character that are complex and beg for sympathy without straying from the character we know in the books.

Poetry

Early, Early Spring: Professor Sinistra Reflects
by Oregonian

I absolutely love the imagery in this piece. The clear picture it painted hooked me and the kaleidoscope of shifting springtime images and the easy rhythm carried me through. The language flowed well from one thought to the next, and the rhyme scheme seemed effortless. It stuck in my head because it gave me a surprisingly good idea of Sinistra's character, and a convincing one. Far from being confined to her Astronomy Tower, she is a woman deeply in tune with the beauty and order of the world around her. Everything, in its way, serves not only to be beautiful but to characterize Sinistra and show how she sees the world. It’s a subtle and lovely character piece.

Non-Canon Romance
James and Me by Northumbrian

This story amply demonstrates Neil’s solid craftsmanship with his accustomed complexity of plot unfolding in his straightforward, unaffected style. The smoothly flowing narrative treats us to a friendship developing slowly and cautiously into a romance, built on the ruins of previous relationships of both characters, in a setting of forgiveness and redemption. The story springs from a rich background of Neil’s extensively-chronicled head canon, with a broad cast of well-developed canon and non-canon characters and carefully detailed scenes. The theme of budding romance is interwoven with the tension of straddling the line between the Muggle and magical worlds, and a hint of startling revelations about the legends of Robin Hood and his merry men.

Welcome to the 2015 Quicksilver Quills!!!

by Padfoot11333 @ 06/23/15 16:12

Hello, and welcome to the TENTH annual Quicksilver Quill awards!

Yes, that’s right, everyone’s favourite MNFF awards ceremony has rolled around once again. Since 2006, the Quicksilver Quills have celebrated the best writing MNFF has to offer, last year giving 15 writing awards across twelve categories. Each year, stories are nominated and judged by our members. Some of MNFF’s finest readers and writers assess each nomination and decide upon the winners.

This year there will be a few changes. Rather than having the twelve categories we have always had, we are condensing the categories due to the number of stories posted this year.

Nomination threads open today and will close at either the end of the day on the 23rd July or once thirty-five stories have been nominated, at which point there will be a one week break in order to assign judges to each category.

There is also at least one new rule for you to take note of.

Rules

+ Only stories written (or, in the case of chaptered fics, updated) since the 1st June 2014 are eligible to be nominated.
+ Stories do not have to be in the corresponding archive category to be nominated. For example, a story may be in a romance category but if you think it is particularly funny, it can be nominated in humour.
+ Do not second nominations – seconding clutters up threads and gives an unrealistic indication of how many stories have been nominated. Having more than one nomination does not increase a story’s chances of winning.
+ Any author can be nominated, including moderators.
+ New Rule: Each person may only nominate a maximum of FIVE stories across the six categories. Unfortunately, this is a necessary step to keep the number of nominations under control, as an ever-decreasing number of judges means we simply don’t have the resources to judge overly large categories. Please try and keep all your nominations for a category in one post to make it easier to keep track of how many stories you have nominated.
+ New Rule: There is a cap on the maximum amount of stories able to be nominated this year at thirty-five. Again, due to the low estimated participation of judges it is simply not realistic to judge more stories than this. This means that nominations
will be done on a first come, first serve sort of basis.

These are changes from last year’s rule of twenty-five per member and no limit on total stories. It does allow for fewer nominations per member, but it is an unfortunate necessity.
+ The judging committees reserve the right not to present an award in any categories where they do not feel the standard of nominations is high enough. However this will only be done as a last resort.

Judging

As with the past few years, I will be opening a thread on the forums for members to volunteer to be judges. Judging can be demanding but also fun, and we really value the input of as many members as possible in the judging process. You can find more information on judging in the sign-up thread. We do require that one be a member of the forums in order to judge, as judging does take place within the forums.

2014 Quicksilver Quill Awards - Results!

by ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor @ 09/30/14 12:45

As you know, the Quicksilver Quill Awards are about awarding the best writing MuggleNet Fan Fiction authors have had to offer for the year. Nominations are received across twelve categories and separated in one-shot and chaptered stories. This year, we have fifteen winners in total.

I would like to profusely thank the judges, who made this all possible. This literally could not have been done without them, and having winners chosen by our members and for our members really reflects how our community works and what sets it apart from other sites out there.

As the number of nominations was small this year, we do have fewer winning stories than in the past, with most categories having only one winner and one category none at all. However, to preserve the integrity of the QSQs, we still judged to the standards we have held for nearly a decade, and the results are truly reflective of how our fandom has carried on for so many years and still produces fine, well-honed literature after all this time. Always.

Like in previous years, winners of the awards will also receive a personalised banner, created by one of MNFF's finest bannermakers and chosen through a special competition. This year's winning banner was created by the most excellent Julia/the opaleye, and you can view a sneak peak by clicking here. Banners will be sent out to winners in the next few days. But now, on to the moment you’ve all been waiting for!

QSQ Winners 2014

Best General Story

One-Shot - Tea Behind Bars by WeasleyMom

There is a great deal packed into this very short story: beautiful prose, spot-on characterisation of Draco, and apt symbolism. Draco is as complex here as in canon. The lustre and thoroughness of the characterisation give this story more steam than many five times its length.

Chaptered - Exile Vilify by the opaleye

We enjoyed seeing the story of other characters on the run from Voldemort. Nell is an abrasive and ambitious character, but it’s obvious there are layers of hurt and caring in her - perfect characterisation for a Muggle-born Slytherin, who has been an outcast in and out of Hogwarts. Though currently incomplete, the smooth intensity of the writing, the set-up of the premise, and the mysteries and secrets hinted at make us look forward to reading more.

Dark/Angsty

Sybill Trelawney and the Unexpected Gift by Squibstress

This story gives so much vivid and aching life to why Trelawney is how she is, and what brought her to the places she'd been. At first, it isn't quite dark enough, but gradually, it sinks into the mire, and then maintains that through to the end. It's got exactly what we were looking for in a winner - great characterisation, interesting plotline, growth, appropriate atmosphere, and really great pacing.

Humour

Wood by ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor

Jess's story is novel, funny, and definitely connected to the spirit of the Potterverse, in an outrageous but hilarious manner. The characterizations are stretched for comedy, but the voices of Marcus Flint and Oliver Wood are well-differentiated and believable. It also manages to be a good parody without the benefit of a bigger word count. And of course, the most important thing in this category: it kept the judges grinning.

Alternate Universe

Four Secrets by hestiajones

This story takes everything that has become stale and overdone about Marauder Era stories and turns it on its head. The subtle changes made to canon are intricately considered, and one cannot help but be riveted as they all play out and blossom into a new identity for the Marauders.

Original Character

Beatrice Avery from Tom Riddle and the Chamber of Secrets by CanisMajor

Though it is difficult to pull off a fascinating character who is so mired in shades of grey, Beatrice Avery fits the bill. This Riddle Era story really sheds light on the dynamics between Gryffindor and Slytherin, while really carrying an authentic, period feeling. Beatrice’s perspective shows who she is in the barest, most unapologetic light, but her astuteness lends a lot to both her own characterisation, as well as for the surrounding cast. In other words, Beatrice is everything you could want in an original character and why she is this year’s best and brightest.

Post-Hogwarts

Crocus by Equinox Chick

This story exemplifies the Post-Hogwarts category, tying to events that link the story to wizarding history. At the same time, it's a refreshing change reading a romance story that does not involve teenagers! Crocus is extremely well-written, with a wonderful exploration of Andromeda's character after the war.

Next Generation

Pat-A-Cake
by foolondahill17

It's original, touching, and we get to see a good deal of the Next Gen world through the eyes of a Squib - and a Weasley one, at that. There was a real pathos to this tale, especially in Molly “Pat” Weasley's struggles with her lack of magical ability. Through Pat’s eyes, there is so much to see about the Potterverse’s most beloved family by how they perceive one of their own who doesn’t fit the mould, and it's easy to empathise with Pat because we don't have the barrier of magic to isolate us from the character.

Poetry

Red Squirrel/Sun Rises
by hestiajones

This poem is thoughtful and beautifully structured. It has a different take to the Fred/George tragedy to many other poems, because it has that element of narrative and the future to it. George with his son, George without Fred, and then ugly crying from the entire judging panel. The writing is very evocative, particularly the use of ‘half’ and the theme of red, and it carries an aura of hope you sense at the end, even through George’s grief and hopelessness.

AND

The Cookie-Cutter Life by minnabird

The language of this poem was just one of the many things that draws you to this tale of Dudley Dursley and his perfect suburban life. It carries a hard-hitting moral, which rounds off the poem fittingly, and fantastic use of rhythm, phrase and structure add to its charisma. It really feels like Dudley has grown immensely.

Canon Romance

A Light in the Gap by WeasleyMom

Lori's story encompasses so much that's at the heart of a great canon-romance. It tells the story without being over sentimental. A missing moment from the books turned into something golden. The language of the story is fluid and easy to follow. This is definitely a story that could reach all audiences.

Non-Canon Romance

One-Shot
- Glass over the Flame by the opaleye

There is a beautiful and subtle intimacy to this story, which is essentially one of what-if. Glass over the Flame has that aching slow burn version of Harmony that remains loyal to canon, to the point that we as judges were rooting for them the whole way through. The imagery is gorgeous and lyrical, and the author artfully explores just how much Harry and Hermione have been through together, to the point that even the most cynical reader would be convinced those buried feelings existed.

Chaptered - Serenade by Equinox Chick

Carole takes us through a romance that is so much more than just two characters getting together. It’s plotty, redemptive and sensual, adhering to what we know about Pansy and Terry in canon and also adding some intriguing personality attributes to them both. The way the narrative alternates between flamboyant parties, corporate settings and romance is effortless. And Pansy’s redemption arc is made all the better because it doesn’t erase or excuse the character we saw in the books, the one ready to hand Harry over the Voldemort; instead, the author simply revealed her better character traits.

Same Sex Pairing

One-Shot - Sanguini, the Vampire by teh tarik

The way Eldred Worple essentially created this Sanguini persona for David means his behaviour in HBP makes a lot more sense. He is such a 3D and fully fleshed out character - intelligent, yet delusional, in a way, and also succumbing to a relationship that was intensely unhealthy. So too is David's characterisation and his acceptance that this is no love story. Rather, their relationship is both mutualistic and parasitic. The pairing is well drawn into the story without being overbearing, but still incredibly important.

Chaptered - Under My Skin by Equinox Chick

This is a fantastically written story with great characterisation - and with characters like these, that's not something we usually get a lot of. Zach and Cormac were so distinct in their characterisations, especially the little details, like Zach being a neat freak and his aloofness, and Cormac's protectiveness of Zach and the way he was in so many ways the complete opposite of Zach. The supporting cast were so well fleshed out, as well - Romilda in particular was a standout character for us judges. More than that, unlike some romance stories, it was great that the author delved further with Zach's backstory.

Welcome to the Ninth Annual Quicksilver Quill Awards

by ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor @ 06/04/14 22:18

Hello, and welcome to the ninth annual Quicksilver Quill awards!

Yes, that’s right, everyone’s favourite MNFF award ceremony has rolled around once again. Since 2006, the Quicksilver Quills have celebrated the best writing MNFF has to offer, last year giving twenty-seven writing awards across twelve categories. Each year, stories are nominated and judged by our members. Some of MNFF’s finest readers and writers assess each nomination and decide upon the winners.

This year, there will once again be twelve categories. In each category, there may be one or two winners, and winners may be separated into one-shots and chaptered.

Categories

Best General Story
Best Dark/Angsty Story
Best Humor Story
Best Canon Romance Story
Best Non-Canon Romance Story
Best Same-Sex Pairing Story
Best Alternate Universe Story
Best Poetry
Best Marauders' Era Story
Best Post-Hogwarts Story
Best Next Generation Story
Best Original Character

Nomination open today and will close at the end of the day on the 23rd July, at which point there will be a one week break in order to assign judges to each category. Judging will begin in August. Anyone is welcome to submit a nomination either via the forums or as a comment here on the archives.

There is also at least one new rule for you to take note of.

Rules

+ Only stories written (or, in the case of chaptered fics, updated) since the 1st June 2013 are eligible to be nominated.

+ Stories do not have to be in the corresponding archive category to be nominated. For example, a story may be in a romance category but if you think it is particularly funny, it can be nominated in humour.

+ Do not second nominations – seconding clutters up threads and gives an unrealistic indication of how many stories have been nominated. Having more than one nomination does not increase a story’s chances of winning.

+ Any author can be nominated, including moderators.

+ New Rule: Each person may only nominate a maximum of TWENTY-FIVE stories across the twelve categories. Unfortunately, this is a necessary step to keep the number of nominations under control, as an ever-decreasing number of judges means we simply don’t have the resources to judge overly large categories. Please try and keep all your nominations for a category in one post to make it easier to keep track of how many stories you have nominated.

This is a change from last year’s rule of three per category. It does allow for fewer nominations per member, but it permits people who read more heavily in certain categories to concentrate on what they know and love best. I don’t anticipate any abuse of this policy. However, if certain categories or individuals spiral out of control, I reserve the right to re-impose a per-category cap to keep the categories judge-able.

+ The judging committees reserve the right not to present an award in any categories where they do not feel the standard of nominations is high enough. However this will only be done as a last resort.

Judging

As with the past few years, I will be opening a thread in the QSQ forum for members to volunteer to be judges. Judging can be demanding but also fun, and we really value the input of as many members as possible in the judging process. You can find more information on judging in the sign-up thread. If you would like to be a judge, please sign up in that forum. If you are not a member of the forums, it takes under a minute to set up an account and send a Sorting Hat request via PM to SortingHat. All judges must be sorted members of the forums simply because it is the only way you can see the judging forums.

Finally…

If you have any questions, please post below! Any nominations, also post below, using this form:

The Great MNFF Tumblr Challenge!

by the opaleye @ 11/08/13 20:05

As the MuggleNet Fanfiction presence on Social Media grows, so does our need for fun and interesting content! Our Tumblr page recently passed another follower milestone, and to celebrate we will be running a competition to produce new content that will encourage more Tumblr users to check out all the wonderful fanfiction that our site has to offer.

If you are a Tumblr user already, you will be familiar with all the beautiful graphics and art that is produced over there. Your challenge is simple: create content based on a particular fic. We’ve already had several users create graphics and art for various fics so check out these examples:

A Palisade of Persuasion

Winters

Going Against Salazar’s Grain

But don’t feel the need to stop at gif sets and edits. Any kind of art or creative content will be welcome. If you like making fanvideos then pick a fic and bring it to life! If you want to cosplay a scene from a fic and send in the photos then that’s great too! Be creative and, most of all, have fun.

The only stipulation is that your creations are based on a fic from MuggleNet Fanfiction and that somewhere in your Tumblr post you credit the fic and link back. Having an excerpt from the fic will help, too, but it’s not necessary. If you click on the examples above, you’ll see what we mean.

Who can enter?

Anyone as long as you are following at least one of MuggleNet’s or MuggleNet Fanfiction’s social media sites. This could be tumblr, facebook, twitter, instagram, you name it! If you aren’t following us on social media, you must be a member of MuggleNet Fanfiction itself.

What’s in it for me?

Well, apart from creating content for our site, there will be a few perks for taking part.

An overall winner will be chosen by a team of MuggleNet Fanfiction moderators. The winner will be featured on the main MuggleNet site as well as our various social media sites, and receive an official WB Deathly Hallows Key Ring!

Any exceptional creations will be featured on the main MuggleNet site as well as our various social media sites.

For MNFF Beta Board users only: All entries will receive 5 participation points with an extra 2 points for each additional piece of content. Please keep track of what you have entered by linking to them in this post using the following form.

Link to entry: (Please link to each entry you submit. This could be the direct link to the MNFF tumblr or your personal tumblr blog. If you have explicit or profane content on your personal tumblr blog that is not family friendly then please link to the MNFF tumblr instead. This means you might have to wait until it is reblogged by MNFF.)

How to Submit

1. If you have a Tumblr account and wish to post your creations yourself, then that is fine. Just be sure to tag your post with ‘mugglenet’ and ‘mugglenet fanfiction’.

Then submit a link to your post on the MuggleNet FanFiction Tumblr Submissions page here.

Quicksilver Quill Awards 2013

by the opaleye @ 09/30/13 17:47
As you know the QSQs are about awarding the best writing MNFF authors have had to offer that year. Nominations are received across twelve categories and separated in one-shot and chaptered stories. This year, due to a few joint winners, we have 27 winners in total across the 12 categories.

Like in previous years, winners of the awards will also receive a personalised banner, created by one of MNFF's finest bannermakers and chosen through a special competition. This year's winning banner was created by the very talented minnabird and you can view a sneak peak by clicking here (you might want to wait until after you've checked the winners though as it might spoil one category for you! Banners will be sent out to winners in the next few days.

QSQ Winners 2013
QSQ Winners

General

One-Shot - Noble Souls by Gmariam

The insight the author gave into how much of an influence Grindelwald was having on Dumbledore is chilling. It felt philosophical, especially the arguments regarding morals, and the visible influences Grindelwald had on Dumbledore was stunning. The elegance with which this story is written is just breathtaking. All in all, the judges loved the inclusion of the music and how historically accurate it was and how well it fit the story, which really made it stand out as an exceptional fic and a clear winner.

Chaptered - Pulling the Strings by Acacia Carter

This story was so well structured, with unfailing logic in every step of the investigation despite the escalation in the plot. The targets and the methodical nature of this story make it so gripping, and the characters just played off one another so well to make this happen. In terms of characterisation, this is the perfect example of what is definitely the most gripping mystery I have ever read, with stellar characterisation of both OCs and canon characters. And despite its incompleteness, it's intricate, amazingly well-honed, and stunning from top to bottom.

Dark/Angsty

One-Shot - Growth by teh tarik

The author told the story of Merope and Tom Riddle so well, with such a brilliant exploration of Merope’s character — her disastrous upbringing, her desperation and just the obvious discomfort she experiences from the start of the story to the end. But what rendered the judges speechless was the exquisite style and the command the author had over her words, so much so that the story was described as “sick and gorgeous” and, above all, unforgettable.

Chaptered - Other Side of Glass by teh tarik

There was so much depth in emotion and darkness in this story, to the point that the judges could really feel the grief for Fred from start to finish. The prose was flawless, the characterisation spot-on and loyal to canon, the plot beautifully crafted and the liberties the author took in terms of style and spacing so effective. There were also so brilliant moments that would make most readers want to laugh and ache and cry at some point or another, especially the exploration of the afterlife. This story stayed with our judges long after reading, and we are all now eagerly awaiting the next update!

Humour

We were unable to choose a single winner in this category largely because we were faced with two examples of what a good humour story should be. Both these epitomise the truism that you shouldn’t sacrifice characterisation for laughs because despite having read our winners several times each, the judges were still laughing over and over.

Fear and Loathing in Florida (Mostly Loathing) by minnabird

The humour is balanced just right between bitterness at their plight and helplessness. From the confusion over Doritos (and how well they're described - ha ha), to the humidity in Florida, this is very funny with laugh out loud moments. Its humour isn't brought about by OOCness or absurdly improbable situations, but rather that it IS in-character and the situation is not all that unlikely.

AND

Morning After by HalfASlug

The characterisation and the situation were very plausible and relatable (I mean, who hasn't woken up after a bender wondering where their pants have gone?). This screamed winner partly because it caught the stages of hangover very well, but mainly because this story also proves that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice characterisation for humour.

Alternate Universe

One-Shot - One, Two, Three by Alice Mac

This story takes an AU situation and truly brings out the pain of it. It's got a lyrical quality to it and almost reads like a very long prose poem to explore Hermione and Harry's loss of Ron. I think it did its job beautifully. It showed a journey through the grieving process for them, and it really did feel like a journey. This fic made my heart ache and I finished it feeling very sad. The emotion was so real and so powerful.

Chaptered - Unbreakable by hestiajones

Natalie is so good at writing dark stories that draw you in deeper and deeper as the story goes on. It has a gripping plot and is really quite chilling. Unbreakable takes something that has become a trope in recent years (Ron's death) and turns it into an original story. The characterisation of everyone here is so very strong, and so very IC. The plot is incredible, very intricate, and it works on many levels.

Original Character

One-Shot - Danny from Footprints in the Sand by Equinox Chick

Danny is just so realistic, so thoughtfully drawn, that one could bump into him at the grocery store or the gym or on the street and have no doubt about how real he is. Also he comes across as a person in his own right, rather than just in relation to Oliver -- more specifically, the way he perceives the Wizarding world and the way the author uses our knowledge of it and of Oliver Wood is very accomplished. Not only do we get a chance to witness the type of person he is and how he relates to other people, we get to see his humanity.

AND

Melea from Wind's Nocturne by Acacia Carter

Despite being a non-human character, Melea is extremely well-rounded and maintains an echo of human thoughts and emotions, which fits perfectly because her character is an personification of the forest around her to connect nature to mankind, and her human qualities don't overbear that truth. And as a dryad, the mythology the author constructs around Melea is very thorough and compelling, which is coupled with superb writing.

Chaptered - Adrian Radley from Stolen Magic by coolh5000

There is a lot to love about Adrian's character. The way he struggles with morality and his beliefs while everyone around him doesn't always agree with him, and the way this affects him socially, emotionally, and intellectually was amazingly done. He has a very believable mixture of naivety and yet thoughtfulness, as he struggles to understand what is going on which is real for most people his age, but particularly poignant for a boy in his circumstances. Finally, his inner strength to do what he thinks is right by standing with his family at the cost of several friendships really sells his Hufflepuff sorting, as well as a candid view of the 'other side' of the war.

Marauder

Chaptered - Love and Order by Gmariam

Marauder era stories need more than a romance at their centre, they need to acknowledge the times and the war that was being fought around them. Love and Order does this brilliantly, giving us a cracking plot and well-thought out characters. Sometimes you just have a gut feeling about a story being great. For me that story is Love and Order. I do think gmariam has done something here that is a step above the typical ME romance fic. The cast of the story is extensive, from Order members to Marauders to Death Eaters to the Ministry, and yet I never felt any of them were underdeveloped in any way. Gina took her time in building chemistry between Frank and Alice while never forgetting the era the story is set in.

Post-Hogwarts

One-Shot - You Can Write The Book by teh tarik

I thought the author did a beautiful job giving life to a character barely mentioned in the books. We see the world Dennis inhabits, but also his struggle to inhabit it without Colin. The imagery and characterization in this story is lovely - I just kept thinking 'wow' at the writing. The telling of Colin’s life through the pictures he took was unique and sad and beautiful. This, I think, is the perfect PH fic in that it really shows someone’s grieving, but at the same time, shows him celebrating Colin’s life, and that is what made this story so special.

AND

Gaps Between by lucca4

This was a really excellent story, well-written with great characterisation. The author did a stunning job of fleshing out Dennis Creevy post-Hogwarts. This story is incredibly well-written and very chilling. Although the pairing isn't necessarily an original rare-pair, the execution of it, the drawing in of other characters and the events of the story made this very original.

Chaptered - Laid to Rest by ToBeOrNotToBeAGryffindor

As a Post-Hogwarts story, this, to me, had everything. The story is dark, intense and intriguing. The author writes dark characters well, and flawed characters very well. The characterisation was excellent and even the most minor of characters were well-fleshed out and believably portrayed. The story did a great job of portraying the Post-Hogwarts world through minor characters and the whole story was impeccably written. The plot was certainly intriguing and the judges can’t wait to see how it ends!

AND

Nineteen Days Later by HalfASlug

This story is so poignant and I found myself really believing in these events just after the war and getting drawn into the emotions. The plot really worked as well. For a story that only covered a few hours, a lot was happening and I think it was a great interpretation of the Post-Hogwarts world, particularly in the immediate aftermath of the battle. The emotions were so well written and the story moved fluidly between angst and happiness. It was great to see the stories of so many characters that we know and love continued past the books and follow the author’s interpretation of how their lives continued was the battle was over.

Next Generation

One-Shot - The Last Casualty by trinsy

This story absolutely charmed us. It is a fantastic exploration of what it could mean to be in the next generation, really getting into the psyche of Teddy but also of the people surrounding him. Teddy and Victoire together make a microcosm of the world they grow up in, and the feeling of loss lingers, yet hope and recovery are also there. It has great pacing, it is well-structured, and the characterisation shines.

Chaptered - Uncovered by Death by Equinox Chick

This story manages to construct a Next Gen world that feels as real as a continuation of canon. This is about Draco's son finding a footing in a world full of people his father resented, a world in which his family's dark history is still freshly remembered. The mystery in it is so compelling and the suspense is tightly held.

Poetry

The Girl In Madam Malkin's by the opaleye

This poem is beautiful, emotional and painfully sad. Everything about this poem's language and structure works toward its theme of brokenness and grief - I love the stuttering, choked feel of the line breaks. Everything about this poem is subtle and that subtlety adds a richness simply because the message isn't forced on the reader. It's honestly one of the most heart-wrenching poems I've ever read. The language was simple but effective

AND

The Absent Guests by hestiajones

I loved the simplicity of this one, because it let the emotions come alive. I just thought it was so sweet, and the language worked so well to draw Petunia's little orderly world. This was such a lovely, startling and compassionate portrayal of Petunia. I love the voice of this poem, especially the tiny bits of humor with which the narrator presents Petunia's otherwise quite sad situation. It has a very striking opening, but it was the ending lines of this poem that really made it for me, that captured Petunia's voice so beautifully. It had a particularly good use of repetition.

Canon Romance

One-Shot - Blackberries by Equinox Chick

Blackberries is a beautiful portrayal of George and Angelina coming together after a long time, but it's so much more than that. It's George figuring out how to live without Fred, all the while trying to ignore his love for a woman he still believes was Fred's girl. The two struggles are happening together at the same time, and therein lies the originality of this fic. The characterization was flawless; Carole did a wonderful job of showing George's serious side, and of capturing Angelina's personality over the course of a handful of flashbacks. The structure is fabulous, with the call of the Quidditch match ratcheting the drama up throughout the fic and breaking up the memories until it climaxes with her injury. This structure was a brilliant decision.

Chaptered - Love and Order by Gmariam

Love and Order is brilliant in the way it so beautifully fleshes out two near-OC characters, surrounds them with great supporting characters and an incredibly suspenseful, gripping plot, and develops of their relationship...it perfectly accomplishes this interwoven plot, characterization, and romance, all of which are basically invented by the author. Gina has essentially created Frank and Alice from nothing, given them unique personalities and challenging jobs, got them both into the Order and pulled them into a gripping plot placed in the middle (or beginning, rather) of the first war. The magic in this fic is really impressive, much of it created or tweaked by the author. The emotions are real, and we get to know Frank and Alice as they learn more about one another and are placed in extremely dangerous situations. This is actually a fantastic Marauder Era story, because it really makes the world come alive, but it's also a great canon romance of a tragic and very very relevant couple.

AND

Seven Simple Years by HalfASlug

It's hard to fathom what an amazing accomplishment this series of missing moments is. The scope is really something. To start with, the characterization is magnificent. Ron and Hermione's thoughts, feelings, and actions are completely convincing at every age they are shown at, from when they're first-years till they're would-be seventh-years. It's not easy to capture the 14 year old Ron, but the author does so well with this that it feels like canon. In every chapter, they, and their thoughts and feelings and situations, seem so real. I think that the depictions of Ron and Hermione's complicated, ever-changing feelings and thoughts towards each other were the fic's greatest strength; they were really spot on.

Non-Canon Romance

One-Shot - Heart's Desire by Squibstress

When a story grips you like this one, it’s hard to forget. It has everything we want in a fic - from fleshing out older characters, to creating vivid worlds, relationships, and personalities for them. There is something truly magical about the storytelling, here. It’s a bit old-fashioned, and truly enchanting.

Chaptered - A Palisade of Persuasion by Equinox Chick

This fic is stunning. Daphne and Lee have such a palpable chemistry. And while the romance is central and integral to this fic, Carole has fleshed it out with so many wonderful and vibrant peripheral characters that add so much colour and life to the narrative, too.

Same Sex Pairing

One-Shot - Footprints in the Sandby Equinox Chick

Danny was a brilliant and realistic character, and the depth of his characterisation as an OC was simply amazing. His interactions with Oliver seem so natural and believable, and it was a refreshing change to see Danny be content with his sexuality, even if the way others feel about it is more complex. Danny’s voice was written with remarkable clarity, while Oliver’s more vulnerable side came out in this story beautifully, and their romance was written in an honest and unsentimental manner that really made the story shine.

Chaptered - Rat by DragonDi

This was such an ambitious and memorable story that hit many high points in terms of plot and characterisation. The author’s presentation of Remus/Sirius as a pairing was done so beautifully, and in an AU situation at that. Its divergence from canon also means the relationships between the Marauders could be examined more closely, and the author carried this out so well. What was great about this fic was that while being an incredibly gripping, suspenseful story, the pairing was always at the forefront, and there was something so thrilling about reading romance interweaved with action.

The Terrible Two-Shot Halloween Challenge

by the opaleye @ 09/20/13 21:54
For many of us summer has been and gone, and we are now at the mercy of autumn and the coming winter. The days are growing shorter, the evenings cooler, and it is almost time to welcome that “night of all nights”, as Poe once wrote, Halloween.

Your challenge, dear writers, is to embrace the ghouls, the fear, and the dark beyond, with a two-shot, using our prompts below.

Sometimes one chapter is not enough to fully develop character and plot, and committing to something more than a few chapters can be daunting to say the least. The art of the two-shot is to build your world, flesh out your characters, develop your plot, perfect your pacing, and bring everything to a final and satisfying conclusion.

All fics must be comprised of two chapters - no more, no less.

All fics must be between 4000 and 15,000 words, total. This means you could have one chapter of only 1500 words, and the second chapter of 2500 words.

All fics must be in the queue by October 31st, 11:59pm GMT.

You MUST be a Sorted member of the Beta Forums to enter. Please click here for more information.

Let the terror begin!

Prompt One:

Ferocious Beasts and How to Avoid Them

“But see, amid the mimic rout,

A crawling shape intrude!

A blood-red thing that writhes from out

The scenic solitude!

It writhes! -it writhes! -with mortal pangs

The mimes become its food,

And seraphs sob at vermin fangs

In human gore imbued.”

-from The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe

With all the Newt Scamander hype, why not crack out some creatures? And what better time to do that than on the spookiest night of the year?

While doing something reckless and stupid on Halloween, your character(s) will encounter a fearsome magical creature. They will have to use their remaining wits and NO MAGIC to get themselves out of an extremely sticky, and possibly bloody, situation. Only time will tell whether they make it out alive.

Prompt Two:

The Masque of the Red Death

“There was much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, much of the bizarre,

something of the terrible, and not a little of that which might have excited
disgust.”

-from The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe

Nothing embraces debauched mystery like a masquerade ball. For this prompt, we are once more taking inspiration from the most macabre of story-tellers, Edgar Allen Poe. Your two-shot must take place at a masquerade ball and during the course of the ball there is a death (or more than one) under suspicious circumstances.

This is your chance to embrace the bacchanal, the intrigue, and the grotesque.

Prompt Three:

What A Tangled Web We Weave

“And where should a man bring his sweet to woo

But here, where such hundreds were lovers too?

Where lie the dead lips that thirst to kiss,

The empty hands that their fellows miss,

Where the maid and her lover, from sere to green,

Sleep bed by bed, with the worm between?

For it’s turn of the year and All Souls’ night,

When the dead can hear and the dead have sight.”

-from All Souls by Edith Wharton

Who thought meeting in a graveyard on All Hallows Eve could be so romantic? But one half of this couple is not who they say they are, and the other isn’t telling the whole truth either. Will their inauspicious romance end just as grimly as it began? Or can they overcome the spectres of the past?

At least one of your main characters must be canon.

Edit: The forums are back up and running.

The Epistolary Birthday Challenge - TTB Biweekly Drabble Challenge

by @ 09/18/13 10:44
Check out our latest drabble challenge in The Three Broomsticks over on the Beta Forums!

Ah, September, scene of lovely children rushing to Platform nine-and-three-quarters, tripping over owls in cages in their haste to get onto the train. What more fitting subject could there be for a September Challenge?

Well, actually there's this one. Every year a certain birthday gets lost in the excitement of the new year at Hogwarts. I'm talking about Hermione. Dagnabbit, we NEVER see her birthday celebrated in the books. We see Harry's frequently, and Ron's (mind you he's whacked out on Love Potion, but still ...) so let us all get our typing fingers flexed and write some birthday love for Hermione.

This should be in the form of a letter (or several), with someone sending Hermione birthday wishes. It can be anyone, and I mean anyone. Don't let the fact of Voldemort's death put you off his declaration beyond the grave that he loves her. Obviously, your writer might have other things he/she wishes to say, so don't restrict it to 'Happy Birthday, Mione!' because that would be boring.

This competition will close on September 24th at 10pm BST.

Quicksilver Quill Awards 2013

by the opaleye @ 06/23/13 3:35
Hello, and welcome to the eighth annual
Quicksilver Quill awards!

Since 2006, the Quicksilver
Quills have celebrated the best writing MNFF has to offer, last year
giving 23 awards across twelve categories. Each year stories are
nominated by our members and then judging panels made up of some of
MNFF's finest readers and writers assess each nomination and decide
upon the winners.

This year, we will also once again be hosting the Forum Quicksilver Quills! You will find more information about these and how they will be run in the Forum Awards sub-forum. You must be a member of the beta forums to be eligible to participate in the Forum Awards.

In the writing awards there will once again be twelve categories. In each category there may be one or two winners, and winners may be separated into one-shots and chaptered.

Nominations are open now and will
close on the 23rd July, at which point judging will
begin. Anyone is welcome to submit a nomination either via the forums
or as a comment on the archives. We are looking to find the absolute
best stories from the last twelve months. They should be well-written,
have engaging plots and characters, and be a good representation of the
category they are nominated in (though they don’t necessarily have to
have been submitted to the corresponding archive category). In short,
they should be the stories that make you go WOW.

The
rules are similar to previous years but please refresh yourself with
them anyway to make sure you nominate the right stories in the right
categories.

Rules

+ Only
stories written (or in the case of chaptered fics updated) since the
1st June 2012 are eligible to be nominated.
+ Stories do not have
to be in the corresponding archive category to be nominated. For
example, a story may be in a romance category but if you think it is
particularly funny, it can be nominated in humor.
+ An author or
story can win more than one award in the same year. We reserve the
right to place a cap on the number of awards given to any one
author/story at a later date.
+ An author is eligible to win in a
category they have been either winner or runner up in before.
+
Winning stories from previous years may not be nominated again in any
category, though with the twelve month rule, we do not expect this to
be an issue.
+ Please use the form below and ensure you provide
a working link. Nominations that do not follow the correct format will
be removed.

+ Each person may only nominate three stories per category.

+ Do not second nominations -- seconding clutters up
threads and gives an unrealistic indication of how many stories have
been nominated. Having more than one nomination does not increase a
story’s chances of winning.
+ Any author can be nominated,
including moderators.
+ The judging committees reserve the right
not to present an award in any categories where they do not feel the
standard of nominations is high enough.

Judging

Judging is done by our members and your can find more information and sign up to judge over on the beta boards. If you don’t have an account on the beta boards, you can sign up for one and follow procedures to be sorted into a house. You can then sign up for judging.

Nominations

Most of the nominating will be done on the forums but
if you don’t have a forum account then you can nominate stories by
posting a comment on this post. All the above rules still apply. To
nominate in this way please, use the following form for your post:

Nomination category (this should be award
category, not archive category):
Title of story and link:

Any nominations which do not use the appropriate
form will be removed.
