Hot Roast Chestnuts by dumbledorefluertwins

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: It is a snowy Christmas Eve. An old man sits by the fireplace and eats roast chestnuts, not knowing that a woman, whom he has not seen for years, will make one last appearance.

Teddy Lupin's first year at Hogwarts. Canon-compliant. Nominated for a 2008 QSQ for best Post-Hogwarts story.

A wonderful story!! Very believable and creative and well-written... if it were a printed book I would say I could hardly put it down.

I'm really enjoying this story so far, and I got such a laugh out of trying to understand what on earth Hugh is saying. Very creative, and I love the theme it's following -- it's very believable that houses would be even more divided after the war!

Breaking Ground by Nyruserra

Summary: Somehow, the barn was the last place he wanted to face her. And frankly, the goat was definitely not helping matters.

i LOVED this! so original, so playful but deep. and all the Irish touches just brought it over the edge. amazing job.

Untitled by blackhairedweasley

Rated: 6th-7th Years •
Summary: A young man has no memory. He is lost in a strange world, looking for anything that might bring him back to reality. But when he returns, when he knows who he is and what faces him, will he still want to know who he is?

One DH spoiler (A line by Ron), but mainly Book 7 disregarded. Even when it comes out of AU..

Second Place in the Gauntlet's Fifth Run by BlackHairedWeasley of Slytherin House.

woah that was really cool. i love how you start off not knowing who the main character is, then you're completely confused, and then it all makes sense. and the epilogue conversation with hermione really makes the story. nice work!

Author's Response: The only downside to that is that some people will get confused and give up on the story. That\'s why I have three reviews for chapter one, but you\'re the second I\'ve gotten for the epilogue.

But I\'m glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the review!

Alexandra Quick and the Thorn Circle by Inverarity

Rated: 1st-2nd Years • Past Featured Story
Summary:

Winner of the 2008 Quick Silver Quills Award for Best General Story.

The first book in the Alexandra Quick series.

The war against Voldemort never reached America, but all is not well there. When 11-year-old Alexandra Quick learns she is a witch, she is plunged into a world of prejudices, intrigue, and danger. Who wants Alexandra dead, and why?

This story is canon-compliant with the Harry Potter universe, but the characters and settings are all original. I've put a lot of work into envisioning a world as detailed as the original series; I hope you enjoy it.

This story is fantastic. I really enjoyed reading it. I love the originality and depth of the characters, especially Alexandra of course, and I couldn't help but be frustrated along with her all through the beginning of the school year when no one was treating her fairly. It's brilliant how every now and then there are references and tips of the hat to the world of Hogwarts and Harry Potter that we all know so well, but your version of the Wizarding world is clearly Americanized and stands on its own. And the plot -- there's nothing worse than a fanfic from another generation/location that basically rips off what J. K. Rowling already wrote, but your plot was fresh and addictive and creative. I can't wait to read the rest of the series! Thanks for writing.

Alexandra Quick and the Lands Below by Inverarity

This is the second book in the Alexandra Quick series.

Gahhh so heart-wrenching, but so so good. The blurred line between "good" and "evil" is so intriguing in this story. I continue to be impressed by your originality, and can't wait to find out what Abraham Thorn is up to. Love the hard-headed heroine.

Wandless by Wandering Wand

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary:

It’s not just any 1st of September. The Philosopher Stone is hidden at Hogwarts, The Boy Who Lived is about to board the Express for the first time. It’s not the best September for something unexpected to happen, for something impossible. Or someone.

This story is not AU, but it focuses on the original character, her plot, her friends, her loves :)

Rating and Warning only for later chapters.

What a wonderful story! Very original, and I liked that it didn't stray from canon; it just followed different characters instead. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this :)

Author's Response: Thank you for your review! It's so nice to know people still read this story after all this time :)

Good Night, Albus by Gmariam

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: A series of drabbles written for the Ravenclaw Almost-Gauntlet, this story includes nine scenes from Albus Severus Potter's time at Hogwarts, beginning with his surprise sorting and following him through Quidditch, O.W.L.s, and a very important relationship. It concludes with a touching reflection on so many memories from over the years.

I think you sell yourself short in the summary by calling this a collection of drabbles! It stands by itself as a strong story line. The fact that most of the snapshots simply describe everyday occurrences made me feel like I knew your characters better... After all, not everyone's Hogwarts experience is as tumultuous and eventful as Harry's ;) Great writing, as always.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! Wow, this is an old story. The thing is, it really is a collection of drabbles, since each was written for a specific prompt. I tried very hard to sew them together into a whole, though, so I'm glad it worked! I'm glad you enjoyed the story and my take on some of these next gen characters. Thank you so much for digging up this old story and leaving such a lovely review! ~Gina :)

I'm really enjoying this story! I especially like how well I feel like I know Jacqui; we really get inside her head and learn her insecurities and her passions. Very engagingly written! Jacqui is VERY good at picking up on the pieces of the Potters' lives that don't quite make sense, and I'm sure the conference-in-Sweden-in-an-hour comment is not about to go unnoticed...

Author's Response: Thanks for the review.
Jacqui cetainly has her insecurities, but as you say, she's an excellent observer, even though you the reader can make more sense of her observations than she can. The conference is Ginny's latest slip. She should have known better...

Uh oh, things are getting serious! I'm glad you're writing again; I really enjoy this story and was sad that it stopped for awhile. I particularly like how many more magic references the Potters are letting slip (especially James), but Jacqui & family just keep (understandably) ignoring them.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review.
There were many reasons why I stopped, but now I'm back and hopefully the next chapter will be soon. James is much too young to e able to keep secrets.

Remembering Lily by Gmariam

Rated: 3rd-5th Years • Past Featured Story
Summary: A lonely figure walks down the street, long auburn hair trailing behind her in the blustery wind. She pulls a red wool coat snug around her, gloved hands tucked into pockets as she wanders the sidewalk, glancing up at the shop fronts. She is young, but her face is lined with sadness, as if searching for something she has lost. Her green eyes long for answers.

Across the way a young man stops and stares at the woman in the red coat, hardly daring to believe it might be her. And yet as she turns and walks back up the street, he knows it is, and his heart stops beating for a moment. He blinks, just to see if she will disappear from his life once more, like she did over a year ago.

She doesn't.

This is wonderful!! I enjoy most James/Lily fics that I read, but they're all the same on some level because they start with James and Lily fighting and falling in love at Hogwarts, and end with Voldemort tracking them down on Halloween. I love that you concocted a completely original explanation for bridging the gap between their interactions 5th year and their marriage, and that you ended it at a time when they're happy; we know what happens next, after all. Very well-written, and great balance of canon and originality.

Blown Out Candle by The_Real_Hermione

This story was excellent! I especially loved the way that you mentioned all the facts we know about the Marauders from canon but you didn't dwell on them, thereby making it a fresh and original fic.

Poor Remus :(

Author's Response: Thanks so much for this lovely review! I tried to show a slightly different side of the Marauders to how they're usually presented in fanfic, so I'm glady ou thought it was original! I agree about the poor Remus... a lot of things go wrong for him. Thanks again for reviewing. ~Katrina

Mourning/Morning by Gmariam

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary: A short poem written for the brother left behind.
Reviewer: ginevra715 Signed
Date: 09/07/12 Title: Chapter 1: Mourning/Morning

I'll throw another interpretation out there, perhaps influenced by all the Marauder fanfics of your I've been reading...

Although they are not true brothers, I feel they wouldn't hesitate to refer to each other this way. I like to think the first half is Remus, mourning James's death in 1981. The second half, nearly 17 years later, is James welcoming Remus to the other side of the veil.

Either way, beautiful poetry!

Author's Response: Ooooh, that's interesting! I had never thought about that but it's a lovely interpretation. I could also see it being about Remus losing James, but then finding Sirius again. I love it! Thanks so much for the review, I really appreciate it! I'm so glad you liked it and pointed out another way of looking at it. Thanks again! ~Gina :)

More Wandless Magic with Malfoy by jenniferes

Thank you for not making me endure Draco&Aceline and Hermione&Tabor for too long :) This story is so addictive, and you do SUCH a good job of thoroughly acknowledging the various difficulties that would come from Hermione and Draco's relationship!

Author's Response: Thank you! I didn't want to torture anybody too long. I'm glad you are enjoying the story. I appreciate the positive feedback! --Jenny

Second Guesses by Acacia Carter

Summary: Neville has got quite enough to be getting on with already, thank you very much, and this... situation with Luna is not making things any easier.
Reviewer: ginevra715 Signed
Date: 03/07/12 Title: Chapter 7: Snowfall

This story is absolutely adorable. And your characterization of Neville and Luna is just perfect. I rarely find any romance fic believable if it didn't already explicitly happen in canon, but you do such justice to J.K. Rowling's characters that it feels right. Can't wait to see where it goes next!

Nostalgia by welshdevondragon

Rated: 1st-2nd Years •
Summary:
Only the sunset knows
My blind desire for the fleeting
Only the moon understands
The beauty of love when held by hand
Like the aura of nostalgia

Nostalgia: From the Greek, meaning, ‘the pain from an old wound.’ Stephen and Beatrice Granger are many thousand miles away from home, and have the vague sense that they’ve left something, or someone, behind.

Lyrics above quoted from the beautiful song Nostalgia by Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo.

As I finished reading this, I was having trouble deciding which was more hauntingly beautiful, this story or the one I just read about Frank Longbottom. Then I realized they are both by you! You write emotions really well. Maybe I'll go see if you have a happier story, though :)

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely words--I'm so glad you enjoyed them both :) I do have happier stories, but they are a bit of a rarity--"When The Weather Turns Fine" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" are probably my *most* happy ones, by usual standards, but I'd also put "Dark Was The Night" in there. Anyway thanks for reading--and it makes me so happy that you enjoyed them both enough to read my other stuff as well! Thank you for your review-Alex

The Hat That Thinks It is a Chair (but is really a reindeer) by Equinox Chick

Rated: 3rd-5th Years •
Summary: In April 2011, Justin Finch-Fletchley is attending a very important event in the Muggle social calender. Usually he loathes the formality of these occasions, but now he has someone to share them with, he starts to relax and have fun.

Ten months ago, a plucky band of flisters from all over the world logged onto AIM to watch and discuss a certain event. This story is dedicated to all of you. ♥ forever.

Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling and I don't expect any garden party invitations in the near future. A spell in the Tower might well be in order.

This is Equinox Chick and this is positively my last entry into the Inaugural Great Hall Challenge. So long and thanks for all the flist!

haha I like it. It's got depth and feeling in the body, but it's bookended by silliness and simple friendship. Kinda elegant that way.
